In 6th Grade Math...
1. We encourage participation—ask me questions, ask each other questions, contribute to discussions by sharing your thinking and explaining your strategies—because we care about what you have to say and what you’re thinking more than we care just about correct answers.
2. It’s okay to make mistakes. In fact, we love mistakes, because they show that you’re taking risks and learning new things. So please, don’t ever erase your work. It gives us a stepping stone to build from. Be brave and share your mistakes with the class, because chances are others thought about it the same way and you could be helping someone else in doing so.
3. We care about quality over quantity. Take your time and do your best work. Depth over speed is valued in this room. We will not bombard you with dozens of practice problems, but we do want your best, focused effort on the Math tasks we do give you. Take pride in your work.
4. We are a team and we will sink or swim together, so let’s help each other be successful!
5. We respect each other and value different perspectives and strategies. There is more than one way to solve a problem and we like seeing the creativity of all of your solutions.
6. We celebrate each other’s successes! Positive attitudes and effort go a long way to creating a safe, happy class environment.
